Try to find media produced by Taiyo Yuden (some TDK and Verbatim CDs/DVDs are produced by Taiyo Yuden) and buy DVD+R and not DVD-R. In any case, avoid CD-RW, DVD-RW, or DVD+RW for permanent storage. For more details read this very nice article.
